Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv And Congenital Syphilis Programme

Date

All pregnant women in both the public and private sectors are routinely tested for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis during pregnancy. HIV-positive pregnant women are initiated on antiretroviral therapy at the earliest opportunity post-diagnosis and are followed up intensively until delivery. Elective C section is offered if the viral load at the point of delivery is above the desired threshold. HIV positive mothers are advised not to breastfeed and replacement formula is provided. Exposed infants are tested for HIV via DNA PCR, placed on prophylactic ARVs, and followed up in the Paediatric Outpatient Department.
