Institutional Framework
Pursuant to the legislation of Antigua and Barbuda (2004), the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) is the designated entity responsible for addressing population and development issues through its Population Demographics and Immigration Commission. It is a permanent multisectoral body mandated to carry out these responsibilities.
In addition, the Department of Social Policy Research and Planning of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation and the Environment is another key institution supporting the coordination and implementation of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development. It also serves as the focal point for the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Participation
Since 2018, the two institutions have collaborated through the establishment of a National Committee to Focus on the Montevideo Consensus Priority Measures. This multisectoral committee meets annually and is composed of government departments and civil society organizations with responsibilities in the areas of social policy, gender equality, ageing, youth, children, older persons, labour and the environment.
The information on Institutionality comes from the country's Voluntary National Report submitted by the country in 2023 .
